Cómo se usa RATHER en inglés

¿QUÉ SIGNIFICA RATHER?

I’d rather = prefiero, preferiría. 

Preferiría llamarte mañana 👉🏻 I’d rather call you tomorrow. 

¡OJO! NO DIGAS 👉🏻 I rather.

LO CORRECTO ES 👉🏻  I would rather, I’d rather.

¿CÓMO SE USA RATHER?

💂‍♀️ Para hablar de lo que preferimos hacer:

Cualquier matrimonio un sábado por la noche eligiendo qué película ver, va a necesitar usar “rather”, al menos 5 veces hasta que se pongan de acuerdo. LOL 😂

¿Qué tipo de película preferís ver?

– I’d rather watch a romantic film.

– No way, that’s what we did last weekend! I’d rather watch a horror film than a romantic film.

¿Qué preferís comer?

– I’d rather not eat the leftovers from yesterday.

– Don’t worry, I ate them already, we could order a pizza!

– Okay, but I’d rather have the Hawaiian than the pepperoni this time.

¿En qué idioma preferís ver la película?

– Would you rather watch the original version or the dubbed version?

– I’d rather watch the original version, unless it’s in Mandarin Chinese.

Como has visto, “I’d rather” es como decir I would prefer.

¡OJO!

👉🏻 I’d prefer TO watch a horror film.

💂‍♀️ Para hablar de lo que preferimos que hagan otros:

En este caso, al igual que en español, utilizamos el subjuntivo, que en inglés, por suerte, coincide con el “past simple”.

Preferiría ponerme este bañador.

I’d rather wear this swimwear.

Lo que prefieres que hagan otros 👉🏻 I’D RATHER + SUBJUNTIVE

Preferiría que te pusieras este bañador.

I’d rather you wore this swimwear.

Preferiría que no usaras mi nueva taza.

💂‍♀️ Para hablar de nuestras preferencias en el pasado:

Preferiría haber ido contigo.

I’d rather have gone with you.

Preferiría que se hubiera quedado en casa.

We’d rather he had stayed at home.

Preferiría que me hubieras llamado antes de venir

I’d rather you had called me before coming to my house.

💂‍♀️ Como adverbio de grado:

“Rather” también significa bastante, más bien, un tanto, un poco, algo…

My new flatmate is rather shy.

I was rather disappointed that you didn’t come to the meeting.

She was rather surprised to see me.

💂‍♀️ Cuando queremos precisar:

Mejor dicho, más bien, para ser más precisos, etc.

No me gustan los mejillones, más bien los odio.

I don’t like mussels, or rather I hate them.

Se le olvidó decírtelo, o mejor dicho, no te lo quería decir.

He forgot to tell you, or rather he didn’t want to tell you.
