Hello there student? ¿Sigues empeñado en traducir al inglés de manera literal todo lo que pasa por tu cabecita? Houston, we have a problem! Por favor, deja de traducir frases al inglés literalmente si quieres evitar “embarrasing moments” o que los nativos te miren como si fueras de otra galaxia. 😅

En este vídeo compartimos algunos de los errores más comunes de los estudiantes de inglés (causados, of course, por traducir al inglés directamente español) que seguramente “most likely, 99% probability” tú también estés cometiendo. Don’t panic! We’re going to get your sorted!

1. ¡Qué pena!

🙅🏻‍♀️ Incorrecto | What a pity!  

Correcto | What a shame!

Oh no, it’s going to rain cats and dogs on your wedding day. What a shame!

2. tomar el desayuno

🙅🏻‍♀️ Incorrecto | take breakfast

Correcto | have breakfast

– What time do you usually have breakfast?

– Around 7 am. I’m an early bird.

– Blimey! That’s early

3. reunión familiar

🙅🏻‍♀️ Incorrecto | family meeting

Correcto | family reunion

– Okay uncle Steve, I miss you too. I’ll see you at the family reunion on Sunday.

O una reunión de amigos 👉🏼 a friends reunion.

4. ¿Me lo puedes explicar?

🙅🏻‍♀️ Incorrecto | Can you explain me?  

Correcto | Can you explain it to me?

I don’t really understand the difference between may and might. Can you explain it to me, please?

Modal verbs drive me mad. Can you explain them to me?

5. ¿Lo puedes repetir, por favor?

🙅🏻‍♀️ Incorrecto | Can you repeat, please?  

Correcto | Sorry, could say that again? / Could you repeat that, please? / Sorry, I didn’t catch that. Would you mind repeating it?

6. regular (ni bien ni mal) Así así

🙅🏻‍♀️ Incorrecto | so-so

Correcto | not too bad

– How are you feeling? – Not too bad. Average. Fair.

– How did your English exam go? – Not too bad.

– How was your meal? – Nothing special. Nothing to write home about.

7. Eres un friki (False friend alert!)

🙅🏻‍♀️ Incorrecto | You’re such a freak

Correcto | You’re such a geek / nerd

– Fancy going surfing on Sunday?

– No sorry. I have a marathon.

– What? You running? No way!

– No, reading Shakespeare for 24 hours non-stop.

– Oh my god! You’re such a geek.

Un “geek” o un “nerd” es un bichillo raro, apasionado de la informática, ratón de biblioteca, etc.

“Freak” en inglés tiene un connotación muy negativa. Si dices que alguien es un “freak” esa persona es rara hasta el punto de incomodarte muchísimo o incluso darte miedo, un loco.

Cuando dices “freak” pienso en esa espectáculos antiguos de mujeres con barbas y hombres muy fuertes. Pienso en una cabra que nace con dos cabezas. We call them “freaks of nature”.

You could also say “when you are from England and you don’t like football, people look at you as if you’re some kind of freak.

De hecho conoces este phrasal verb, ¿verdad? What do you do when you find a huge spider in the bath? Exactly, you freak out!

8. vuelvo en un segundo

🙅🏻‍♀️ Incorrecto | I come back in one moment

Correcto | I’ll be back in a sec / be right back

– Oh someone’s ringing at the door. I’ll be right back.

– I’m just going to make a quick cup of tea. I’ll be back in a sec.

9. gracias por todo

🙅🏻‍♀️ Incorrecto | thanks for all

Correcto | thanks for everything

I have my results! I pass with an A+! I couldn’t have done it without you, though! Thanks for everything!

10. en mi trabajo

🙅🏻‍♀️ Incorrecto | in my work

Correcto | in my job / at my job

I use English almost every day in my job.

If you feel stuck in your job, maybe it’s time to look for something else.

físicamente (lugar de trabajo, oficina)

Send it to me by email. I have a printer at work, I can do it tomorrow.

11. buenas noches

🙅🏻‍♀️ Incorrecto | Good night

Correcto | Good evening

• Buenos días – good morning – hasta las 12 p.m
• Buenas tardes – good afternoon – de 12 a 6 pm
• Buenas noches – good night- ¡solo cuando te vas a la cama!

Pero, ¿entonces que decimos a partir de las 6 de la tarde?

– Good evening, sir. I’m afraid we’re fully booked this evening. Do you have a reservation with us?

– Yes, sure. Let me find it.

– May I see your reservation number?

– There you go sweetheart.

12. todo el día

🙅🏻‍♀️ Incorrecto | all the day

Correcto | all day

Llevas todo el día tirado a la bartola. Esto no puede ser.

You’ve been lying down all day. This is not acceptable.

I need to sit down for 5 minutes. I’ve been running around all day!

13. Quiero invitarte yo

🙅🏻‍♀️ Incorrecto | I want to invite you

Correcto | Let me treat you

– Shall we ask for the bill?

– Oh I already paid on my way to the toilet.

– Oh no, please let me treat you. It’s your birthday, you can’t pay!

Correcto | at the moment

– I’m afraid she’s not here at the moment.

¡Esta semana la escuchamos otra vez! Estábamos en una pizzería en el centro de Barcelona y una de las empleadas le dijo a unos turistas que estaban esperando fuera:

X  Sorry, we don’t have a table IN this moment.

✔ Sorry, we don’t have a table AT the moment.
